Chapter 11: “The Ache Beneath the Smile: When Grief Woke Me Up”
Chapter 11: “The Ache Beneath the Smile: When Grief Woke Me Up”
Quote:
"Grief is just love with nowhere to go." — Jamie Anderson
Verse:
Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
"You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book."
— A gentle and intimate image of divine care for unseen grief.
Anchored Truth (Essence Mindset)
Grief doesn’t ask for permission. It simply arrives—sometimes suddenly, sometimes like a slow fog.
For years, I wore joy like armor. I smiled so no one would see the ache behind my eyes. I laughed because crying felt too vulnerable, too exposed, too unsafe. I was the strong one, the capable one, the encourager. But deep beneath the surface, there was a river of sorrow I hadn’t yet named.
When grief finally came, it didn’t knock gently. It split me open. But in the unraveling, I found truth. I discovered that grief is not a weakness. It’s not a failure to move on. Grief is the soul’s proof that love existed. That something mattered. That something was lost, and it deserved to be mourned.
The ache beneath the smile was not something to hide—it was something to honor.
Glimpse of the Story
There was a morning I stood in front of the mirror and saw a woman I barely recognized. My smile was flawless, my clothes were neat, my tone gentle. But my eyes looked so tired. Not just from lack of sleep—but from years of performing strength. From grieving in silence. From pretending I wasn’t broken when I was.
That morning, I let myself cry.
Not the quiet kind. But the soul cry—the kind that pours from a place you didn’t even know was still bleeding. And after the tears, came breath. Stillness. Space.
In that sacred unraveling, I met myself. Not the mask. Not the performance. But me.
Prayer / Love Note
God,
I thought grief would destroy me. But instead, You met me there. You held me when I had nothing left to give. You whispered love into the hollow places. Thank You for turning my breakdowns into sacred ground.
Help me to no longer shame my sorrow. Help me mourn what was lost so I can fully receive what remains. Let my tears be cleansing, not hidden. Let my ache be honored, not silenced.
And when the weight returns, remind me:
Stay alive. Don’t give up. You are needed. You are wanted. You are not alone. Keep going. I love you and I am there with you. Begin again. I love you always and forever.
Amen.
Reflection & Encouragement
What grief have you been carrying in silence?
Grief doesn’t always look like mourning a death. Sometimes it’s grieving your childhood. A version of yourself you never got to be. A dream that never came true. A love that was never safe. A truth that was never spoken.
Today, allow yourself to feel it.
Grief is not the end. It is often the doorway to awakening.
You are still here.
And that is holy.
