Chapter 20: What Love Is—And What It Isn’t

(Separating soul love from survival attachment.)

Quote:
"Love is not about possession. Love is about appreciation." — Osho

Verse:
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." — 1 John 4:18 (NIV)

Anchored Truth (Essence Mindset)

Real love frees. Survival attachment binds.

Sometimes we mistake familiarity for love. Or obligation. Or history. Or the way someone made us feel on the best day, even if every other day was filled with pain. We call it love, but what we are really holding is fear of letting go.

Soul love calls us higher. It nourishes, even when it's hard. It respects boundaries. It tells the truth. It is rooted in freedom, not fear.

Survival attachment, on the other hand, often begins in trauma. It’s the desperate clinging we do when love was inconsistent, when abandonment taught us to settle, when chaos became our normal. We stay not because it is holy, but because it is familiar.

But love is not what hurts us. Misused, mislabeled attachment is. And healing means learning to tell the difference.

Glimpse of the Story

I used to believe that love meant endurance. That staying through harm was proof of devotion. I thought loyalty was love. I thought sacrifice was love. I thought losing myself was love.

But slowly, I began to realize: love is not supposed to break you.

There were nights I cried in the shower just to hide it. Days I convinced myself I was fine. I repeated mantras like, "This is what strong women do." But strength isn’t staying where you're slowly dying. Strength is walking away when your soul is starving.

It took years to untangle the difference between what I needed and what I was conditioned to accept. The grief was real. The guilt was heavy. But the clarity? It was everything.

Love doesn’t silence you. Love doesn’t erase you. Love doesn’t demand you shrink.

Love sees you. Love protects. Love frees.

Prayer / Love Note

God,
Thank You for revealing to me what love truly is.
For helping me unlearn the lies that told me pain was proof of love.

Heal the places in me where I confused suffering for loyalty.
Untangle the patterns that kept me bound to what hurt me.
Show me how to love freely, safely, and wholly—first with You, and then with myself.

Teach me how to receive love that doesn’t require me to disappear.
Let me give and receive from a place of wholeness, not fear.

And when I forget, remind me:

Stay alive. Don’t give up. You are needed. You are wanted. You are not alone. Keep going. I love you and I am there with you. Begin again. I love you always and forever.

Amen.

Reflection & Encouragement

Ask yourself gently:

  • What did I first learn love looked like?

  • Where did I pick up the belief that I had to earn love by suffering?

  • What would it look like to love myself the way I hoped others would?

Remember: Love is not something to survive. It is something to thrive in.

You are worthy of love that doesn’t hurt.
You are worthy of love that doesn’t confuse you.
You are worthy of love that brings you home to yourself.
